Subject: Nematode Populations

Nematode populations have been surprisingly high this year considering the fact that it has been very hot and dry. I would have predicted lower populations since nematodes thrive when the host is healthy and there is good soil moisture. While most of the stress to putting green turf this year has been due to drought and heat, we have consistently seen greens with populations of lance > 800 per 100 cc soil, and stunt > 1,000 per 100 cc soil. When several different nematodes are above threshold in the same green, we can expect roots to be functioning less than their potential. Populations may still bump up a bit over the next few weeks so I am recommending Nemacur in some of these cases.
